Johan de Witt is het bekendste slachtoffer van het Groene Zoodje, de executieplaats van het Hof van Holland. Johan de Witt werd de zondebok van het Rampjaar 1672. Op 20 augustus van 1672 werd hij hier gelyncht door de Haagse bevolking. Hun lijken werden vervolgens op de nabijgelegen Vijverberg aan een paal opgehangen. Het beeld wijst met zijn vinger naar de plek waar de moord plaatsvond.
