In 1997 hield de gemeente Zierikzee op te bestaan en werd de gemeente onderdeel van de grotere gemeente Schouwen-Duiveland. Het gemeentehuis van deze gemeente staat wel in Zierikzee. Het gemeentehuis is een architectonisch hoogstandje dat geënt lijkt te zijn op het Guggenheim Museum te Bilbao. Een kenmerk ervan is dat het topzwaar lijkt doordat het naar boven toe breder uitloopt.
