Op deze heuvel (Amersfoortse Berg) werd een observatiepost opgesteld voor de meting van de snelheid van het geluid door de Nederlandse wetenschapper Gerrit Moll. De gebeurde in de zomer van 1823. Er werd een kanon opsteld, samen met een telescoop, en een aantal meetinstrumenten om te zien wat de beinvloedende factoren waren (hygrometer, thermometer, barometer en windijzer). De meting gebeurde uiteindelijk op 27-28 juni 1823. Het resultaat was de meest nauwkeurige bepaling van de snelheid van het geluid in de wereld (332 m/sec).
