Dit gebied wordt ook wel 'Blauwe Hand' genoemd. Vroeger lag er een dam in het kanaal Beuker/Steenwijk, daar moesten de schepen met turf over gepakt worden. De turven werden uitgeladen, en aan de andere kant van de dam het andere schip in geladen. Omdat de turf erg koperhoudend was, kregen de werklieden blauwe handen. Vandaar de naam Blauwe Hand. U kunt een afbeelding van een 'blauwe hand' vinden op het tegelplateau bij het brugwachtershuisje, op de brug bij de Blauwe Hand.
