Culemborg ) is een stad en gemeente in de Neder-Betuwe, in de Nederlandse provincie Gelderland. De gemeente telt 29.348 inwoners en heeft een oppervlakte van 31,23 km² . Binnen de gemeentegrenzen ligt de buurtschap Goilberdingen.De oudste vermelding van Culemborg dateert uit 1281: de plaats werd toen Culenburgh genoemd. In de loop der tijd zijn diverse varianten in gebruik geweest: Kulenborch , Culenborgh , Colemborch , Culemborch . Het eerste deel van de naam verwijst naar een kuil, oftewel een plas water die is ontstaan bij een dijkdoorbraak . Het tweede deel verwijst naar de burcht die rond 1270 nabij de kuil was gebouwd. De naam Culemborg betekent dus 'burcht aan de kuil.
