In zijn reisverslag noteert Dürer dat hij vanuit Antwerpen naar Zeeland gaat nadat hij hoort dat er bij Zierikzee een enorme walvis is aangespoeld.
Hij reist via Bergen op Zoom en komt per schip aan in Arnemuiden; vandaar gaat hij door naar Zierikzee.
Wanneer hij uiteindelijk in Zierikzee aankomt, is het dier al weer door de vloed terug in zee getrokken, zodat hij het niet meer kan tekenen.
