Waarschijnlijk dankt het dorp haar naam aan de familie Osse, die een sluis beheerde (Zijl). Tegenwoordig is de sluis niet meer in gebruik. Vooral in de zomer trekt Ossenzijl veel toeristen die een dagje naar De Weerribben gaan. Ossenzijl ligt deels in natuurgebied De Weerribben en dit gebied is al eens uitgekozen tot mooiste plek van Nederland.
