Het ligt ten noordwesten van Bolsward en ten zuidoosten van Harlingen, in de streek de Bouwhoek. Door het dorp stroomt de Arumervaart die overgaat in de Harlingervaart. In 2021 telde het dorp 1.055 inwoners. Onder het dorp vallen ook de buurtschappen Baarderburen en Grauwe Kat.Op 4 juli 1380 werd de Slag bij Arum geleverd tussen de monniken van Ludingakerke en die van Oldeklooster, waarbij in totaal meer dan 130 man sneuvelden. De edelen Sicke Gratinga en Gale Hania, zwaargewond, werden naar Ludingakerke teruggevoerd. Hania zou overlijden aan zijn verwondingen.
