Station Leeuwarden werd in gebruik genomen op 27 oktober 1863 met de opening van de spoorlijn Harlingen – Leeuwarden. Dit was de tweede door de Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen in gebruik genomen spoorlijn. In 1866 werd de lijn verlengd naar Groningen. Dit was een deel van de door de Staat der Nederlanden aangelegde Lijn B, van Harlingen naar Nieuweschans .
