Het ligt ten noordwesten van Drachten en ten westen van De Wilgen. Langs het noorden van het dorpsgebied lopen de Smalle Eesterzanding, Monnike Ee en de Wijde Ee. In 2021 telde het dorp 45 inwoners.Smalle Ee is daarmee het kleinste dorp van de gemeente, maar vroeger was het de hoofdplaats en naamgever van de grietenij en de latere gemeente Smallingerland. Wegens de geringe omvang wordt het ook wel een buurtschap genoemd. Samen met De Wilgen en Buitenstverlaat heeft het sinds 1945 een dorpsbelangenvereniging.
