Het ligt ten noorden van de stad Franeker aan de N384, in de streek de Bouwhoek. Langs het dorpsgebied stroomt de Dongjumervaart en loopt de N31.Dongjum vormt met Boer het tweelingdorp Dongjum-Boer. De twee dorpen werken op veel vlakken samen en hebben sinds april 1969 de dorpsbelangenvereniging Dorpsbelang Dongjum-Boer. In 2021 telde het dorp 375 inwoners.
