Hier lag vroeger 'Keukenduin', het gebied waar de groenten werden geteeld en het wild werd gevangen dat naar de keukens van kasteel Teylingen ging. Nadat kasteel Teylingen door de Spanjaarden was verwoest, werd hier in 1640 een landhuis gebouwd dat Keukenhof ging heten. Het huis werd verder uitgebreid met torens en diverse tuinen, waaronder een uitgebreide moestuin. Er werd steeds meer grond bij gekocht, het huis werd omgebouwd tot kasteel en zo ontstond landgoed Keukenhof. Halverwege de 19e eeuw werd Frederik's Hof toegevoegd, een speelhuis voor de zoon des huizes.
