Het gebied ten zuiden van de Blokzijl-Steenwijk lijn maakt deel uit van het "De Wieden" Nationaal Park: meer dan 70 waterlichamen (meren en vijvers) die voor een groot deel zijn ontstaan uit veenwinning. Dit gebied is daardoor veel natter dan de noordelijke regio. Deze waterlichamen worden omzoomd door smalle wegen die perfect begaanbaar zijn.
