Bier was in de Middeleeuwen beter dan water omdat het door het brouwproces bacterievrij was. Zoals zo veel kloosters had ook het klooster van de Mariënwaerdt een belangrijke brouwerij. De ingang naar de kelder van de brouwerij is hier nog te zien.
