De Waalseilandbrug is in 1913 door Jo van der Mey ontworpen. De massiviteit van de brug en de driehoekige doorvaarten vallen direct in het oog. Die hoekigheid vind je terug in de smeedijzeren balustrade van de brug.
De smeedijzeren zeepaardjes onderaan de lantaarns zijn mogelijk het werk van zijn toenmalige assistent Piet Kramer.
Destijds werden de driehoekige kepervormige doorvaarten sterk bekritiseerd, omdat ze niet zouden passen in de vloeiende lijnen van de traditionele boogbruggen.
