De Doornse Kei is afkomstig uit Scandinavië. Tijdens de voorlaatste ijstijd, toen een gletsjertong tot halverwege Nederland kwam en vorm gaf aan de Veluwe en de Utrechtse Heuvelrug, kwamen er ook zwerfstenen mee. De meeste opgegraven zwerfstenen zijn als aardkundig monument in de Zanderij Maarn bijeengebracht, maar één steen heeft de dans ontsprongen en is in de Kaapse Bossen op een sokkel geplaatst.
