Op de plaats van de herinneringskapel stond vanaf het midden van de 12e eeuw de priorij van Hooidonk. Dit is een van de eerste kloosters in Noord-Brabant. In 1146 gaf de abt van het Limburgse augustijnenklooster Rolduc toestemming tot de stichting van de priorij Hooidonk, op een natuurlijk eiland in de Dommel bij Nederwetten. Aanvankelijk was het een dubbelklooster, dus voor mannen en vrouwen. Maar vanaf 1242 woonden er enkel vrouwelijke religieuzen van adellijke afkomst.
