Er zijn veel steden in de wereld met een overriviers stadsdeel. In Amsterdam was stadsdeel Noord, aan de andere kant van het IJ, voor veel stadgenoten terra incognita. Die tijd is voorbij. Noord is hip. Nog altijd kost het wat tijd om er te komen, maar de overtocht met de pont is ook een kwartier genieten. In 1920 zijn in Noord de eerste tuindorpen verrezen. Sinds 2000 wordt er flink bijgebouwd.

Achter het Centraal Station nemen we pont F4 naar het NDSM-terrein. We varen langs het nieuwe Gerechtshof, links, en rechts de nieuwe wijk Overhoeks, de hangplek het Stenen Hoofd, links, en het Shell Lab, rechts, de Graansilo, links.
