Er zijn nogal wat pogingen geweest om het paradijs te lokaliseren. Een bekende is de beschrijving van Dante Alighieri. Dante plaatste het aardse paradijs bovenop de berg het vagevuur, zoals hij beschrijft in zijn goddelijke komedie. Een schilderij van Agnolo Bronzino uit 1530 toont Dante die naar het vagevuur staart.
De plaats van het vagevuur is niet zo duidelijk. Gebaseerd op het grote boek van Toby Lester (The Fourth Part of the World) zou het zich op de evenaar aan het begin van het Oosten moeten bevinden, precies halverwege de wereldbol vanaf Jeruzalem.
Maar Matteo Starri stelt dat Dante aangeeft dat de berg het vagevuur precies aan de andere kant van de wereld ligt, tegenover Jeruzalem (de tegenpool van Jeruzalem). En dat ligt niet op de evenaar. Een geweldige site om de antipode te achterhalen is http://map.talleye.com/bighole.php.
