Viseu is een stad en gemeente in het gelijknamige Portugese district Viseu.
De gemeente heeft een totale oppervlakte van 507 km² en telde 98.753 inwoners in 2007. De gelijknamige stad telt ongeveer 47.250 inwoners.
Musa ibn Nusayr veroverde de stad omstreeks 714. In 791 wist Alfons II van Asturië de stad in te nemen. Alfons II trof hier een graf aan met de inscriptie 'Hic requiescit Rudericus rex Gothorum' . Deze Roderik was de laatste koning der Visigoten, waarvan wordt verondersteld dat hij tijdens de Slag aan de Guadalete is gesneuveld; zijn lichaam is nooit gevonden, wel zijn paard.
