El jaciment de Messel és una antiga pedrera de pissarra bituminosa situada prop de Messel . Té una gran importància geològica i paleontològica per la multitud de fòssils que s'hi han trobat. Fou declarat Patrimoni de la Humanitat el 9 de desembre del 1995.
Messel és el millor jaciment paleontològic del món per conèixer el medi ambient de l'Eocè . El jaciment proporciona informació única en el seu gènere sobre les primeres etapes de l'evolució dels mamífers placentaris durant el Cenozoic. S'hi han trobat fòssils excepcionalment ben conservats, des d'esquelets perfectament articulats fins a continguts estomacals, que permeten estudiar en detall el nínxol ecològic que ocupaven en vida.
