La plaça del Canal de Ponce es troba entre la Porta de La Caleta i el Baluarte de los Mártires.
Francisco Ponce Cordones és el descobridor a través de la seva recerca històrica del Canal Bahía-La Caleta , que en època fenicia dividia l'actual nucli urbà de Cadis en dues illes.
Els fenicis van fundar Gadir (any 1104 aC) en el que aleshores eren dues illes, Erytheia i Kotinoussa , separades per un canal que unia l'oceà Atlàntic amb la badia. Amb el temps, la llera va quedar aterrida fins a desaparèixer, a causa dels sediments del riu Guadalete i de l'acció humana, conformant l'aspecte actual de la ciutat. A la Caleta, amb la marea baixa, es pot veure l'escull al fons marí, separat per un canal de sorra que unia l'oceà Atlàntic amb la badia.
