Montenau er en by i den tysktalende kommune Amel i den belgiske provins Liège. Byen ligger på territoriet af delkommunen Amel. I 1876 udførte tyskerne Julius Jung geologisk forskning i området omkring Sankt Vith. Han arbejdede på en rute for en jernbane, der skulle forbinde Aachen og Sankt Vith: Vennbahn. Jung havde arbejdet som holdleder i amerikanske guldminer og var fascineret af guldforekomsterne nær Amel. Der var beviser for primitiv guldudvinding i romertiden og også forskellige stednavne, der henviser til guld, i området.
