Pascal Verbeken beskriver det perfekt i sin bog Grand Central Belge: 'Det knitrende centrum af Entre Sambre et Meuse-regionen har det dog aldrig været. Mariembourg havde ikke industri, men to møller, fem bryggerier, et garveri og seks teglværker. Alt er forsvundet. Af de seksogtredive landbrugsbedrifter, der stadig eksisterede i 1930, er der kun fem tilbage.'
