Couvin is located in the famous limestone belt of Devonian limestone. The limestone belt is a narrow band south of the Fagne-Famenne and consists almost entirely of Upper Devonian limestone. It is like a step leading up to the Ardennes. It is situated much higher than the Fagne-Famenne depression. The rivers from the Ardennes that pass through this region give rise to spectacular karst phenomena. In geology, these dissolution phenomena are referred to as karst.
