Vismarkedet omtales allerede i det 13. århundrede. Pladsen opstod på grund af sin beliggenhed ved en dengang eksisterende Dijlearm og var stedet for en indre havn i Leuven. Det var stedet for meget handel og havneaktivitet samt opholdssted for fiskerne. Vismarkedet er byens ældste marked.
