Jernbanelinjen Bruxelles-Luxembourg blev indviet i 1858. I 1873 blev de belgiske statsjernbaner ejere af jernbanenet, og en ny station blev indrettet, som erstattede den træ- og stenhytte, der hidtil havde budt rejsende velkommen. Stationen blev bygget i lorraine kalksten og blå sten efter tegningerne fra den provinsielle arkitekt VAN DE WIJNGAERT (1884-1885), hvorefter dens omgivelser blev anlagt, herunder bemærkelsesværdige bygninger i Art Nouveau-stil og det beskedne område for jernbaneansatte (Schoppach). Gare Avenue blev totalt renoveret i 2002-2003. Statues of Mercury er værket af skulptøren Bettina SCHOLL-SABBATINI.
