Med 'Prins de Ligne' menes Karel von Arenberg (1515 -1616). Karel, søn af Jean de Ligne og Margaretha vander Marck, arvede navnet 'Arenberg' fra sin mor, som i sin ægteskabskontrakt lod fastslå, at hendes børn måtte bære det uddøde navn Arenberg og våbnet fra deres forfædre.
Oprindeligt var denne forbindelse mellem Naamsesteenweg og Waversebaan ikke mere end en markvej. Den blev inddæmmet og i 1905 omdøbt til Prins de Lignestraat ved festlighederne for 75-års jubilæet for belgisk uafhængighed.
