Odlingen af hørfrø fandt sted langs Leie mellem Petegem-Deinze og Wervik samt i Mandel-dalen. Kvaliteten af Leie-vand var fremragende, og hør fra Leie-regionen var kendt som det bedste i verden. Leie fik derfor sit kælenavn "Den gyldne flod". På grund af forurening og lugtgener blev rådningsprocessen i floden reduceret og flyttet til rådningsanlæg. I dag, især i Frankrig, bliver hør normalt rådnede på marken (dug-rådnede).
