Weißenfels er med omkring 40.000 indbyggere den mest befolkningsrige by i Burgenlandkreis i Sachsen-Anhalt. Byen Weißenfels har siden 2010 haft yderligere elleve lokaliteter, der tidligere var selvstændige kommuner.
Den var residensby for hertugdømmet Sachsen-Weißenfels, der eksisterede fra 1656 til 1746. Fra denne tid og andre epoker vidner det tidlige barokslot Neu-Augustusburg og andre betydningsfulde kulturminder, især i Weißenfels' kerneby.
