Duisburg er en selvstændig storby, som ligger ved udmundingen af Ruhr i Rhinen. Byen er en del af metropolregionen Rhein-Ruhr med i alt cirka ti millioner indbyggere og tilhører både regionen Niederrhein og Ruhrområdet. Den ligger i regeringsområdet Düsseldorf og er med cirka en halv million indbyggere den femte største by i delstaten Nordrhein-Westfalen efter Köln, Düsseldorf, Dortmund og Essen.
