Templet blev bygget mellem 1761 og 1781 med donationer fra kong Carlos III, økonomiske bidrag fra de egne leridanos og også fra biskop Joaquín Sánchez. Dette skete, fordi den gamle katedral, efter arvekrigen, var blevet beslaglagt for at blive brugt som fæstning og militært bastion.
