I det område, hvor Maasbommel nu ligger, opholdt romerne sig engang. En af de smukkeste og sjældneste fund fra Maasbommel er en ren sølv romersk trompetfibula (kappe nål). Denne type nål stammer fra Skotland. Et identisk eksemplar ligger på museet i Edinburgh, Skotland.
Maasbommel selv blev første gang nævnt som Buomele i 1144. Det fik stadsretter den 15. august 1312 og blev en Hansa by. I Maasbommel blev der under Reinald III prentet mønter.
