Byen blev første gang nævnt i 1281 som Gerslach og betyder tilspidset grøft. Det havde engang en kirke, men den blev nedrevet i 1735, og kun klokketårnet står tilbage. I 1840 var det hjem for 146 mennesker. Før 1934 var Gersloot en del af Aengwirden kommune.
