Der Kanal nach Beverlo wurde in einem Rekordtempo von 3 Jahren angelegt. Das Graben wurde 1854 begonnen. Er fungiert als ein Abzweig des Kanals Bocholt-Herentals und wurde hauptsächlich aus militärischen Gründen gegraben. Es war ein Versorgungs- kanal für den Garnisonsstandort Leopoldsburg. Später wurde er auch kommerziell wichtig für die Metallindustrie in Lommel.
Der Kanal endet in der Hafenbucht von Leopoldsburg und ist schiffbar ohne Schleusen.
