In der Rijselstraat, der Hauptstraße von Menen, machten die Einwohner von Menen am 4. Oktober 1914 erstmals Bekanntschaft mit den Deutschen. Die ersten Ulanen trafen in der Stadt ein.
Während der Besatzung fanden in der Kirche sowohl Gottesdienste für Katholiken als auch für Protestanten statt. Nach einem protestantischen Gottesdienst ging der Pastor mit einem Weihekrug und einem Weihwassergefäß in der Kirche umher, um sie zu desinfizieren.
Auf Höhe des Restaurants L'époque stand ein deutsches Wachhütchen in den Farben Schwarz-Rot-Weiß.
In der Rijselstraat gab es auch eine Mess für Offiziere, und in der Nummer 63 befand sich das Haus des "Ortskommandanten".
