Mariembourg war einst eine Stadt, fühlt sich jetzt jedoch eher wie ein Dorf an. Pascal Verbeken beschreibt es perfekt in seinem Buch Grand Central Belge: 'Das knisternde Zentrum der Region Entre Sambre et Meuse war es übrigens niemals. Mariembourg hatte keine Industrie, sondern zwei Mühlen, fünf Brauereien, eine Gerberei und sechs Ziegelbrennereien. Alles ist verschwunden. Von den sechsunddreißig Landwirtschaftsbetrieben, die 1930 noch existierten, bleiben fünf übrig.'
