Die Fähre von Appels-Berlare wird bereits in Dokumenten von 1255 erwähnt. Auf alten Karten steht die Bezeichnung 'Appelsveer', aber die Einwohner auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite sprechen von der 'Fähre von Berlare'. Wie bei anderen Fähren wurden früher mit einer Fähre Tiere, Schubkarren und Wagen übergesetzt. Die Umgebung der Fähre diente als Kulisse im flämischen Kultfilm 'Mira', basierend auf Stijn Streuvels' Roman 'Der Untergang der Wasserhoek'. In demselben Film kommt auch die Mirabrücke über die Durme in Hamme vor.
