Die Namen „Fortstraße“ und „Vestingstraße“ verweisen auf ein Fort, das im Auftrag des spanischen Generals Monterey (1675) erbaut wurde. Umgeben von sechs Meter dicken und sieben Meter hohen Mauern lagen eine Kaserne, ein Gefängnis und Lagerhäuser. Das militärische Bollwerk sollte die strategisch schwache Südseite von Brüssel vor feindlichen Angriffen schützen. Es nötigte unter anderem die Truppen von Ludwig XIV., 1695 die Stadt von weiter weg und tiefer gelegenem Scheuthelling zu beschießen. Die letzten Überreste des Forts verschwanden 1862. Nur die Straßennamen blieben erhalten.
