Der junge Hubert Malfait (1898-1971) erhält als angehender Künstler von Emile Claus (der in Astene ein Stammgast im Café von Malfaits Vater war) guten Rat. Claus ermutigt Malfait, in der Natur zu arbeiten, und Malfait zeigt ihm seine ersten kleinen Gemälde. Später wird sich Malfait zum Expressionisten entwickeln. „Die Gendarmen“ nähern sich aus dem Dorf dem Kreuzungspunkt mit der Straßenverbindung zwischen Gent und Kortrijk. Fast visionär schauen sie über die Straße in Richtung des heutigen „Malfaitplatzes“.
