Kurz nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg (1947) erschienen die ersten vollholzigen Sitzbänke an der Zeedijk von Middelkerke. Zuerst noch grün-weiß, später in den Farben von Middelkerke: blau und weiß, gestrichen. Diese ersten massivholzernen Bänke waren ein eigenes Design des Middelkerkers Rudolf Lombaert und wurden von dem lokalen Schreiner Maurice Minu aus „kongolesischem Holz“ gebaut. Mit der Zeit sind sie untrennbar mit dem Bild des touristischen Middelkerke verbunden geblieben.
