Der Ortsname Brunnen leitet sich von mittelhochdeutsch bronn, bronnen ab, was ‚Quelle‘ oder ‚Quellen‘ bedeutet. In der Ebene ob Brunnen entspringt das Leewasser aus Quellen mit einer beeindruckenden Wassermenge. Dies ist der Ursprung für den Ortsnamen Brunnen als Name der Gemeinde.
