Nierstein ist eine Stadt im Landkreis Mainz-Bingen in Rheinland-Pfalz. Sie gehört seit dem 1. Juli 2014 der Verbandsgemeinde Rhein-Selz an, deren größte Kommune sie mit 8.625 Einwohnern ist. Nierstein ist gemäß Landesplanung als Mittelzentrum ausgewiesen.
Nierstein liegt in Rheinhessen am Rhein, ca. 12 Kilometer südlich von Mainz und 25 Kilometer nördlich von Worms. Nachbargemeinden innerhalb der Verbandsgemeinde Rhein-Selz sind Selzen, Köngernheim und Friesenheim im Westen, Dalheim, Dexheim und die Stadt Oppenheim im Süden sowie im Norden Mommenheim und die der Verbandsgemeinde Bodenheim zugehörigen Gemeinden Lörzweiler und Nackenheim. In Nierstein mündet der Flügelsbach, der auch durch den Stadtteil Schwabsburg fließt, in den Rhein. Auf der anderen Rheinseite liegt der zu Trebur gehörende Kornsand.
