Gottenz liegt nördlich von Gröbers im Bereich zwischen Halle und Leipzig. Unmittelbar südlich des Dorfes verläuft die Bundesautobahn 14. Nördlich von Gottenz liegen fünf Teiche.
Eine erste urkundliche Erwähnung des Orts ist aus dem Jahr 1371 als Gotentz überliefert. Gottenz stand unter der Verwaltung des Patrimonialgericht Lochau und gehörte zum Saalkreis des Erzstifts Magdeburg. 1680 kam dieses als Herzogtum Magdeburg unter brandenburg-preußische Herrschaft.
