Das Frauenstift Gernrode wurde 959 gegründet und bestand bis ins 17. Jahrhundert. Es war reichsunmittelbar und dem Status einer Reichsabtei gleichgestellt. Es gehörte in der Frühen Neuzeit als Reichsstand dem obersächsischen Reichskreis und dem Rheinischen Reichsprälatenkollegium an.
Der Markgraf Gero begründete 959 auf seiner Burg Geronisroth am Nordostrand des Harzes ein Kanonissenstift. Da sein einziger Sohn ohne Erben zu hinterlassen verstorben war, vermachte Gero dem Stift sein gesamtes Eigengut. Erste Äbtissin wurde Hathui, die Witwe seines Sohnes Siegfried. Sie stammte aus dem Geschlecht der Billunger und war eine Nichte der Königin Mathilde. Das Stift sollte auch als Grablege und dem dauernden Gebetsgedenken des Stifters dienen. Mit dem Bau der Stiftskirche wurde wahrscheinlich 961 begonnen.
