Als Königin Christina von Schweden im Oktober 1655 in Königstein eintraf, war die Stadt Teil des Erzbistums Mainz. Während ihrer Reise durch das Gebiet des Erzbischofs Johann Philipp von Schönborn, von Königstein im Nordwesten bis Aub im Südosten, kümmerte er sich um ihr Wohlergehen. Doch der Prälat und die Königin trafen sich nicht, da sie „inkognito“ reiste. In Königstein weigerte sich Christina sogar, von seinem Statthalter auf der Burg des Erzbischofs empfangen zu werden. Heute können die Ruinen der riesigen Burg auf dem Hügel besichtigt werden. Tipp: Lassen Sie Ihr Auto auf dem Parkplatz Stadtmitte an der Hauptstraße stehen und besichtigen Sie Schloss und Altstadt zu Fuß.
