Fossilien von Muscheln können an den Felsen des Peliongebirges gefunden werden, selbst in großen Höhen, was darauf hinweist, dass die Gipfel von Pelion einst am Grund des Meeres lagen. Vor etwa 140 Millionen Jahren hob eine nach oben gerichtete orogenetische Bewegung von immensem Ausmaß einen schmalen Streifen Land über die Meereswellen, der von Makedonien ausging und Olympus, Kissavos, Pelion und einen Teil von Nordevia einschloss. Die Berge von Pelion stammen aus dieser Zeit.
