Der Fuciner See war bis zu seiner vollständigen Trockenlegung im Jahre 1875 das größte Binnengewässer Mittelitaliens.
Der See lag vier Kilometer südlich der Stadt Avezzano auf einer Höhe von 662 Metern über NN und umfasste etwa 155 Quadratkilometer. Der ringsum vom Gebirge umgebene Karstsee besaß keinen natürlichen Abfluss, so dass sein Wasserspiegel oft erheblich schwankte. Die umliegenden Ortschaften waren daher oft von Überschwemmungen betroffen.
