Der Botanische Garten ist einer der ältesten botanischen Gärten der Welt (1682), ursprünglich als Heilkräutergarten gedacht.
Im Hugo de Vries-Labor (1912) des Architekten Joan van der Meij sind unter anderem im dekorativen Mauerwerk bereits einige Elemente des Amsterdamer Schulstils erkennbar.
In der Plantage Parklaan wohnte auf Nummer 9 der Erblichkeitsforscher Hugo de Vries. Er erhielt sein eigenes Zugangsportal direkt gegenüber seinem Wohnhaus. Durch dieses Zugangsportal hat man direkten Blick auf die Gunnera (eine Pflanze mit Mammutblättern mit einem Durchmesser von bis zu 2,50 Metern).
Etwas weiter liegt das wunderschöne Palmenhaus, das speziell erbaut wurde, um Hugo de Vries zu ehren.
