Das Gebäude wurde ursprünglich als Saalkirche entworfen, 1926 wurde es um ein Querschiff erweitert. Der Entwurf stammt von dem Architekten Lammert Reitsma. Seit der Fusion zwischen Reformierten und Gereformierten trägt die Kirche den Namen Gute-Hirten-Kirche.
Ulrum war der Ort, an dem Hendrik de Cock 1834 die Afscheiding begann. Die reformierte Kirche in Ulrum wurde kurz nach dem Zusammenkommen von Afscheiding und Doleantie im Jahr 1892 erbaut.
